Back pain: The refreshing fruit you should add to your shopping list to prevent back pain
Back pain is a common condition that affects most people at some point in their lifetime, according to the NHS. It could be caused by sleeping in the wrong position, having bad posture, or even by having a minor injury. In most cases, back pain isn’t anything to worry about, and it’ll get better by itself within a few weeks or months. You could lower your risk of back pain symptoms by eating more watermelon, it’s been claimed.
Watermelon is a great food for getting rid of your lower backache, said medical website Everyday Health.
Deeply-coloured fruit and vegetables, including watermelon, are great additions to an anti-inflammatory diet.
Reducing inflammation, and cutting back on inflammatory foods, is one of the best way to avoid back pain, it said.
“Many foods have been shown to reduce [or increase] inflammation, a known cause for back pain,” said the medical website.
“When you have back pain, changing your diet may help you avoid it.
“If you’re looking for foods that reduce back pain and are loaded with nutrition, try carrots, beets, sweet potatoes, cherries, berries, grapes and red wine, pomegranate, and watermelon.
“Herbs and spices, including basil, cinnamon, ginger, rosemary, garlic, curcumin, onions, oregano, and turmeric tend to be especially rich in anti-inflammatory agents, so season generously.
“Also, drink healthy herb teas and true teas [green, oolong, and white].”
If you already suffer from back pain, you may benefit from eating more olive oil or brightly-coloured fruits, it added.
That’s because they help to reduce inflammation in cartilage in the spinal column, which helps to control back pain and stiffness.
Other good choices for an anti-inflammatory diet include avocados, nuts, lean proteins, and even cocoa.
Regular exercise and doing stretches could also help to prevent back pain from returning, said the NHS.
Speak to a GP or physiotherapist for advice on which exercises to try, said the NHS.
Those most at risk of developing back pain are people that are overweight. Losing just a few pounds could help to prevent the condition.
You should see a GP or dial NHS 111 immediately if you have back pain, combined with a numbness or tingling around your genitals, chest pain, or loss of bladder or bowel control.
These symptoms could be a sign of something more serious, and need to be checked immediately.
