Roger Federer: Ruthless Swiss star reveals key tactic to beat Borna Coric in Dubai semi
Coric has had a gruelling schedule in Dubai and finished his quarter-final at around 1am local time on Friday morning.
And it had taken a clear toll on the Croatian as he struggled to keep up with Federer.
The Swiss star hit at least five winning drop shots as he stretched Coric’s tired legs.
And after sealing his place in the final against Stefanos Tsitsipas, Federer revealed the use of drop shots was a tactical decision from him against a fatigued opponent.
Federer said: “It’s great. I’m very happy. It’s been a great tournament so far.
“Same for Borna too. He won three matches 7-6 in the third so I think he was a bit tired today.
“And I was maybe the guy who could profit from it.
“But I think I played a really good match again in swirly, tough conditions.
“I’m incredibly excited to be in another final in Dubai.
“Today was more about drop shots. I like to play some drop shots to check Borna out and that worked very well.
“Always tricky to play them in the wind as they tend to fly off the racket a bit strangely in the wind.
“But as you go deeper in the tournament you can play closer to the lines. You have more rhythm you know how the ball is flying, how much spin you need put on the ball.
“All these things fall into place and it was a good match for me and I hope I can keep it up against Tsitsipas tomorrow.
