UFC 235: Jon Jones reveals what he saw in Anthony Smith face-to-face
‘Bones’ will take on Anthony Smith at the T-Mobile Arena in what will be his 12th world title fight. He defeated Daniel Cormier in 2017, but the decision was ruled later overturned as a no-contest.
His opponent, Smith, will be challenging for world honours for the first time, but has insisted that he will be heading home with the belt on Saturday night.
Smith is coming off the back of an impressive run of results, with just two defeats in his last nine fights, and has finished his last three.
Whilst the challenger has insisted he is confident, Jones declared after their staredown on Wednesday that he saw the nerves starting to creep in.
“I saw his lips trembling a little bit,” he told MMAFighting.com
“Maybe he’s nervous.
“He actually talks a really good game, but his lip was quivering.
“I’m not saying he’s scared, it just shows me that emotionally he’s a guy where this fight means everything to him.
“That’s a dangerous place to be in.
“When a fight means too much to you, it’s a dangerous place to be in, man.”
Jones has beaten every fighter he has faced with the exception of Matt Hammil, who he lost to via disqualification after a set of savage elbows.
Saturday night will be a test, as Smith is known for his heavy hands.
But the two-time champion remains confident.
“No, he’s not [anything different]. He’s not,” Jones continued.
“I’ve fought heavy-hitters before, wild brawlers, i’ve fought many black belts on the ground, there’s nothing he’s done that I haven’t seen.
“I’m not trying to downplay him by any means, but when you learn how to become a 23-year-old world champion and stay unbeaten for ten years, your mental space – I don’t think it’s like most.”
